The Guilderland Garden Club was established in 1964 by a group of ladies who love gardening, flower design, and making floral arrangements. Today the Club also includes men.
Since 1975, the Club and the Guilderland Historical Society have co-hosted a townwide open house and greens show in December at the Historic Mynderse-Frederick House in Guilderland Center. This has become an annual community event with tours of the house, holiday decorations, wreaths and arrangements made by Club members.
In the summer of 2009, the Club, with the help of the Guilderland Parks Department and a local master gardener, began development of a perennial garden at the Mynderse-Frederick House consisting mainly of flowers from gardens of Club members. The Club also added an herb garden. In Fall 2013, this ongoing project received a Landscape Design Award from the Federated Garden Clubs of NYS District III. In October 2014, the Club received the Violet S. Thoron Award for the promotion of landscape design from the Central Atlantic Region of National Garden Clubs, Inc.
Members of the Club have exhibited and won awards at local, state and national flower shows including the New York in Bloom at the State Museum, Cathedral in Bloom, the Capital District Flower and Garden Show at HVCC, the Altamont Fair and the Newport, RI Flower Show. Some of the members hold the designation of Master Gardener from Cornell Cooperative Extension and/or Flower Show Judge. Through our affiliation with the National and Federated Garden Clubs, members are eligible to attend seminars and other training sessions to learn about flower design and judging flower shows.
Monthly meetings of the Guilderland Garden Club are scheduled from April – November. Meetings include either a presentation or field trip related to birds, gardening techniques, aroma therapy or planning special events. Some meetings are open to the public. Yearly dues for the Club are $25 payable on or before the April meeting this includes funding for the State and District dues. Members accepted after the August meeting shall pay $15 dues for the remainder of the year.
