March 27, 2025

While Spring arrived last week, March’s unpredictable weather has continued, with intermittent sunny and cloudy weather, and the occasional snow flurries.  Town staff are continuing to prepare ballfields, trails, and the golf course for your enjoyment, and no guess yet on when the golf course will open.  The 2025 Major League opens today, if you don’t count the two games played more than a week ago in Japan, with the NY Mets’ first game against Houston this afternoon.  More details are shared below.

With spring’s arrival, the calendar is quickly filling up with outdoor activities.  On Friday, April 25 from 1pm to 4pm, the Tree Preservation Committee is celebrating Arbor Day with the free handout of about 110 tree seedlings, one per family, at Tawasentha Park. There will be 30 Sugar Maples, 30 Eastern Redbuds and 50 Concolor Firs. Each seedling will come with an informational packet of tree descriptions, planting instructions, and word games for kids. Town Arborist Tim Downey and Parks staff will also answer questions on tree planting and maintenance.

I Love My Parks

On Saturday, May 3 from 10am to 1pm at Tawasentha Park, the Town is participating in I Love My Park Day, a State-wide volunteer effort, by helping to remove invasive species, garden beautification, and a scavenger hunt.   More information is available by calling the Parks & Rec Office at (518) 456-3150 or by emailing Parks Foreman Dave Jenkins at jenkinsd@togny.org.

Parks & Rec has opened registration for its popular spring school break program.  April Break Fun And Games will take place from Monday, April 14 through Thursday, April 17 from 9am to 11m each day at Guilderland Elementary School.  The program is for students in grades 1 to 6 who reside in Town or are students in the Guilderland Central School District.  The day will start with warm-up tag games followed by games such as Jailbreak, Pins Down, Survivor, Seven-Base Kickball, Indoor Soccer, Basketball and more.

Park & Rec has also opened registration for its 2025 Summer Program, which take place from Monday, June 30 to Friday, August 8, with one-week half-day camps, swimming lessons, and dozens of sports and enrichment camps.  The printed lime-colored 2025 brochures are available at Town Hall and the Park & Rec’s Office.  The brochures will be delivered by back-pack mail at schools before the Spring break.

Parks & Rec has opened registration for Pickleball for Beginners which will take place from Monday, June 2 to Friday, June 6 from 9am to 11am at Tawasentha Park, when you can improve your Pickleball game from beginner to an advanced beginner/intermediate player, and learn the basic skills and rules of the sport.  Paddles, if needed, and balls will be provided.   The Town’s pickleball courts are already in use, with four courts each at Tawasentha Park and Nott Road Park.   Additional courts at Nott Road should be ready for use this spring.

The Town’s trail system is beginning to dry up with scant rain over the past few days but there are muddy and slippery conditions.  Please remember that, in all Town parks and open spaces, dogs must be on a leash at all times.  Your dog may be very friendly, but hikers and park patrons do not know that and the presence of an unleashed dog can be disconcerting.  The exceptions to this rule are the Town’s two dog parks at Nott Road Park and behind EMS Station 1 in Westmere.  Please also note that Western Turnpike Golf Course has historically opened in early to mid-April, depending on fickle early spring weather, and walking is not allowed on golf cart paths during the golf season.

Please remember that draft Comprehensive Plan Update is currently being reviewed by the Planning Board and Town Board.   You can follow the review progress on the Town’s website.  You can access the Comprehensive Plan Update and its appendices online or review hard copies at the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall.  Under State law, the Town Board must await the Planning Board’s report on the draft.  When completed, the Planning Board’s report will be posted online.  The Town Board will likely schedule its next public hearing on the draft in May after receiving the Planning Board’s final report.

With spring cleanup underway, please remember that Highway crews only pick up lawn bags and tied brush and will not vacuum leaves until fall.  Leaf piles should be bagged.  The Highway Department is beginning to sweep streets, clean out stormwater drains, and also start sweeping more than 50-miles of sidewalks.

Please remember that, if your home has a septic system or cesspool that adversely impacts certain designated waterbodies, you may be eligible for reimbursement for replacement costs under the Septic System Replacement Fund Program.  The program reimburses eligible property owners with grants for up to 50% of the costs (up to $10,000) of their eligible septic system projects. Grants are awarded only to those septic system projects that will significantly and quantifiably reduce environmental and/or public health impacts from cesspools or septic systems.   You can check your property’s eligibility by entering your property’s address.  This rare opportunity is a collaboration between the State, County, and Town, and property owners to address a pressing environmental and public health issue.

You still have time for reserving a pavilion at Tawasentha Park for family outings and local business events. You can view the availability calendar for Tawasentha Park Pavilion Rentals.  To request a booking, please submit a completed Request for Use of Facilities/Know the Rules and required payment (credit card, check or cash) to the Town of Guilderland. You can drop off the required forms or mail them to Guilderland Parks & Recreation Department at 181 State Route 146, Altamont, NY 12009, or faxed to 518-456-3156.

The Town’s Senior Services Department’s March newsletter has information about classes and seminars, tax preparation assistance, trips, medical and shopping transportation, next month’s book discussion, legal aide, monthly meal calendar, games, and much more.  On Wednesdays from 11am to 12:30pm, the Guilderland Public Library is the home for Senior Connects!, where seniors can have a friendly chat on a wide-range of interesting topics.  The prior topics included home downsizing, senior resources, hobbies, books, movies, favorite day trips, and local events.  No registration is required.

Please remember that the State’s ban prohibiting residential brush burning runs through May 14. Backyard fire pits and campfires less than three feet in height and four feet in length, width, or diameter are allowed, as are small cooking fires. Only charcoal or dry, clean, untreated, or unpainted wood can be burned.

To no one’s surprise, given the sweeping cutbacks by the current administration, the Federal government ended the program under which residents could order free at-home COVID-19 test kits.  The program had been terminated in late January and revived a few days later.  Before you throw out “expired” test kits, please check to see if the expiration dates were extended.

Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter.
