WTGC

Cross-Country Trails at WTGC 2.9.2025

A series of storms deposited enough snow for Parks crews to groom cross-country trails at Western Turnpike Golf Course.  I also know that numerous residents enjoyed snowshoeing on trails in Vosburgh Open Space and newly opened Bozenkill Reserve.  And, as of 2pm today, a major winter storm, with a forecast of 20 inches of snow.  It should provide perfect conditions for all winter sporting activities.  Please check the Parks Department’s webpage for the latest conditions of the groomed cross-country ski tracks and snowshoeing trails.  More details are shared below.

Town News & Announcements

The Town Board will hold a second public hearing on Tuesday, March 4 at 7pm on the draft Comprehensive Plan Update. At that first public hearing, only a handful of speakers shared their comments on the draft Plan.  You can access the Plan Update and its appendices online or review hard copies at the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall or the Guilderland Public Library.

Yesterday morning, I presented the 2025 State of the Town Address, accompanied with a PowerPoint presentation.  The one-hour address included next planned steps in adopting the Comprehensive Plan Update, and the Plan’s recommendations on affordable housing options, protecting natural resources, promoting pedestrian safety, responding to climate change, and much more.  It also detailed the Town’s record investments in support of first responders, including a new ambulance station, fire training tower, dispatch consoles, police vehicles, and new EMS and police positions.  It also highlighted enhancements in the Town’s park system, with a new planned park, playgrounds, pickleball courts, lighting for girls’ softball, new boxed lacrosse, and security cameras, and the $4.3 million project to replace water meters.  I have also received dozens of compliments on the content of the presentation and how the Town is meeting the needs of residents and improving the quality of life of residents, despite the uncertain impacts of Executive Orders and future Federal government actions.

2.13.2025

Snow Storm

I also thank residents for taking time to help the Highway Department’s snow clearing efforts by taking the time to remove garbage cans, basketball hoops, and other obstructions from the paved surface, and not parking vehicles overnight on Town roads.  Highway plows were out very early today, and will likely have to deal with another storm (20 inches?) this weekend.  It looks like it is becoming more like a typical winter, with total snow amount now just above average, and winter storms passing through every few days.  I thank the Highway staff for their stellar work for maintaining our roads.

A reminder that the deadline to register for the Parks & Recreation ‘s February Break Fun~N~Games Camp is Monday, February 17.  The Break Camp takes place during the upcoming winter school break week from Tuesday, February 18 through Friday, February 21 from 9am to 11am at Guilderland Elementary School.  The instructor is Mike Schaffer, Physical Education Teacher at Lynnwood Elementary. The program is for students in Grades 1 to 6, and includes warm-up tag games followed by games such as Jailbreak, Pins Down, Basketball, Seven-Base Kickball, Indoor Soccer and many more.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma

We are pleased to announce that Playhouse Stage Company is returning to the Guilderland Performing Arts Center by offering Oklahoma!, one of the most successful musicals in history.   The performances will take place at 7:30pm on Thursday, July 31 thru Saturday, August 2, and a 3pm matinee on Saturday, August 2.  All seating is free and on a first-come, first-served basis.  You can bring your own lawn chair or blanket.

Please remember that, if your home has a septic system or cesspool that adversely impacts certain designated waterbodies, you may be eligible for reimbursement for replacement costs under the Septic System Replacement Fund Program.  I know several homeowners have taken advantage of this program to upgrade their septic systems. The program reimburses eligible property owners with grants for up to 50% of the costs (up to $10,000) of their eligible septic system projects. Grants are awarded only to those septic system projects that will significantly and quantifiably reduce environmental and/or public health impacts from cesspools or septic systems.   You can check your property’s eligibility by entering your property’s address.  This rare opportunity is a collaboration between the State, County, and Town, and property owners to address a pressing environmental and public health issue.

The State’s deadline for applying for property tax exemptions is March 1, the tax status date.   If you are a senior citizen (65 years of age or older by December 31, 2025), a person with a qualifying physical disability, a veteran, eligible firefighter, or other exemptions, please make sure to apply before March 1.  The Assessor cannot extend the State’s March 1 deadline.  For more information on exemptions, please visit the website, call (518) 356-1980, or stop by the Assessor’s office.

A reminder as spring weather approaches, you can reserve Tawasentha Park’s pavilions for family outings and local business events.  Walk-in reservations (with payment) have priority over phone, faxed or emailed reservation requests (with payment).  To request booking a pavilion, please submit a completed Request for Use of Facilities/Know the Rules and required payment (credit card, check or cash) to the Town of Guilderland. You can drop off the required forms or mail them to Guilderland Parks & Recreation Department at 181 State Route 146, Altamont, NY 12009, or faxed to 518-456-3156.  You can view the availability calendar for Tawasentha Park Pavilion Rentals.

Pinebush

Night at the Discovery Center

The Albany Pine Bush Preserve is hosting its annual Night at the Discovery Center on Wednesday, February 19 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm at its Discovery Center.  Visitors are invited to stop by the Discovery Center after normal business hours to explore, pick up an activity kit and see the exhibits come to life.  All ages are welcome for this free special event and no pre-registration is required.  Light refreshments will be served.

This Saturday, February 15 at 10am, the Preserve is sponsoring Frozen Flora, when you can learn about what happens to wildflowers and how to identify them in the winter.  After an informational presentation, there will be a short hike.

The Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy has opened 4-miles of trails in its Upper Bozen Kill Preserve, a 225-acre property at the end of Bond Road.  The new trail system also connects to the existing trail system at the Lower Bozen Kill Preserve.  The total trails are nearly 6 miles.  You can access the new entrance to the Upper Bozen Kill Preserve by continuing north on Westfall Road past the existing Lower Bozen Kill Preserve entrance and turn left on Bond Rd.  A parking lot and preserve kiosk is located at the end of the road.  The trail system is open year-round, and given its elevation, often, like this week, has sufficient snow for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

This Saturday, February 15 at 10am, the MHLC is hosting Winter Wildlife Tracking, when Dan Yacobellis, a certified Level 3 Track & Sign facilitator, who has studied the animals of the northeast and their habitats for three decades, will lead a hike at the 208-acre Winn Preserve in Altamont.
